| We are
pleased to announce the opening of a very interesting
exhibition dedicated to the painter from Valencia, Manolo
Valdés and his works from the 80´s. This decade,
marked by the disolution of the "Equipo Crónica"
and the death of Rafael Solbes, is a very important
period in this artist´s life. The exhibition includes paintings,
sculptures and graphics works wich caracterize the period
in wich Valdés became a well known artist in
Spain and all over the world.
We show includes three
impressive sculptures dedicated to Mariana de Austria:
(formerly painted by Velazquez) the already famous "menina
valdesiana" made in zinc, lead and canvas.
And the oil from 1983, La Modelo y el Cuadro"
(The Model and the Pinting. 63.0 x 45.2 inches), wich has
been considered one of the fundamental canvases in the
series called "apropiaciones"
(appropiations), in wich the artist reinterprets the
great master´s famous icons.
From that same year, we
are also showing "El estudio"
(The Studio. 78.7 x 78.7 inches), a real symphony of
color wich caracterizes the artit´s best work during the
80´s, ans another oil under the same title (39.3 x 31.8
inches)
The painting entitled "Obetura
nº 2" is the biggest in the exhibition
(67.5 x 94.5 inches) and is also dated from 1983.
The wooden sculpture "La
Reina Mariana X" (75.6 x 26.0 x 21.6 inches)
dated from 1982 and is the best expression of the
artist´s skill in three-dimensional works.
This exhibition is an
authentic positive show for collectors, for it is unusual
that a private gallery can put together a series of
important works by this well known artist.
Manolo Valdés, at
the age of 43, was awarded the Spanish "Premio
Nacional de Artes Plásticas", and in 1998 "Medalla
de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes"
His works are shown at
Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, The Museum of Contemporary
Arts in New York, Pompidou Center in Paris and the
Kuntstmuseum in Berlin, among others.
